Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Erasmus?
The aim of the program is to improve the quality of higher education in Europe and to strengthen its European dimension. This objective can be summarized as making good practices from different European countries available for the benefit of Europe as a whole. The Erasmus program seeks to achieve these objectives by promoting inter-country cooperation between universities, the exchange of students and educators across Europe and by contributing to the development of transparency and academic recognition of studies and degrees in the participating countries.

How can we benefit from the Erasmus student exchange program?
The Erasmus program is open to higher education institutions in the 27 member states of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, which are not members of the European Union but are members of the European Economic Area, and Croatia and Turkey, which are candidates for membership of the European Union.

What should we do to participate in this program?
In order to participate in the program, you must follow the new semester application announcements to be made on our university's web page www.giresun.edu.tr and the posters that will be pasted in certain places within our university and follow the specified steps.

Is GPA important?
GPA is important during mobility activities. The issues related to the grade point average were specified in the Erasmus Application Handbook prepared by the National Agency. It must be at least 2.20 for associate and undergraduate students and at least 2.50 for master's and doctoral students.

What is the procedure we have to follow after passing the exam?
Our student who has won the exam and made the approval process is in the status of ERASMUS CANDIDATE STUDENT until he/she receives his/her visa. After this stage, the student who has made the approval process must contact the department coordinator and fill in the forms required for the application in full, signed and original and send them to the opposite university.

What determines the grouping of countries?
Countries are divided into groups and the amount of money is determined by the National Agency. The living conditions of the countries are taken into consideration when making this distinction.

Why do we pay a visa fee at the Consulate even though we have a letter from the university?
Obtaining a visa letter from the university is to make it easier for you to obtain a visa. The fact that some Consulates or Embassies charge visa fees is entirely at the discretion of those institutions, as these institutions are independent within the countries in which they are located and such practices are entirely related to the states to which they are affiliated.

Why do we make three Learning Agreements (LAs)?
LA means learning agreement and in order for a document to be an agreement, it must be signed by the institutions and persons who are parties to it. Here, one of the three signed LAs must be in the student, one in the university where he / she will study abroad and one in Giresun University. If the required signatures are missing and there are not three of them, this document does not qualify as an agreement.

Why do we make two copies of the grant agreement?
The reason for making the grant agreement in two copies is that, as with the LA, this document must be in the possession of each of the signatories for it to be an agreement. Once both copies of the grant agreement have been signed, the student can take one copy.

Why do you need a health policy?
The health policy is not a mandatory document required from the student participating in Erasmus Learning Mobility. The purpose of having insurance is to take precautions against a problem that may be encountered. It is not deemed essential by Giresun University, but some consulates may also require health insurance, so it would be healthier to get the necessary information from the consulate before getting insurance and act accordingly.

Why do you need a power of attorney?
The purpose of requesting a power of attorney is to ensure that after the student goes abroad, he/she does not have any problems when faced with a transaction that he/she needs to do either at school or with money, and to ensure that the transactions are carried out here as if the student has not gone abroad. It is not necessary to give a power of attorney, it is purely for precautionary purposes.

Why should I open a EURO account?
The reason for opening a Euro account is that the money from the Central Directorate for European Union Education and Youth Programs (National Agency) is transferred to the universities in Turkey in Euros and the money in the university budgets is in Euros. For this reason, the money in the university budget in Euros is also transferred to the student in Euros.

How are the dates on the grant agreement determined?
The date on the grant agreement is determined according to the date on the invitation letter and payment is made accordingly, so the duration of the student's stay abroad must be clearly stated on the invitation letter.

Why are the dates on the grant agreement written in months and weeks?
The duration on the grant agreement must be written in months and weeks, as the grant amount is calculated in months and weeks.

How do we find accommodation in universities where we will study abroad?
During the time you will study abroad, your accommodation is generally provided by the university abroad. The university provides guidance to the student in this regard, but in some countries and universities, the accommodation has to be arranged entirely by the student.

When will the grants be paid?
Grants are disbursed on average within a week after the students have completed all the required paperwork.

Will they welcome us in the destination country?
It is entirely at the discretion of the host university to meet the students at airports, bus terminals or train stations in the destination countries. There is no binding provision in this regard.

Will the grants be enough for the duration of our stay?
Grant amounts are determined by the National Agency taking into account the living standards of the countries. For this reason, it may be possible to afford this money in certain places with an average expenditure, but it should not be forgotten here that the grant given to students is a scholarship, not a salary that will cover their expenses abroad. Another point is that whether the money is enough or not is related to the expenditure of the student.

Will the courses we will take at the universities we will attend be in English?
Whether the courses at the universities where our students will study abroad are in English or in the native language of that country is entirely related to the university. For this reason, it is recommended that our students make a conscious choice during the Erasmus application period and research the places they want to go in advance.

Some students who went before say that the lessons in France and Italy are not in English, what will we do if the same situation happens to us?
Since universities in Western European countries (France, Germany, Spain, Italy, etc.) prioritize education in their own language and all universities except some universities are based on the language of the country of residence, the language of the country of residence is valid as the language of education.

Can we take a language course at the university and get a grant for it?
Except for Western European countries (France, Germany, Spain, Italy, etc.), the languages of other countries can be benefited from by receiving grants. (In order to see which countries are included in the scope, the erasmus application handbook should be consulted.)

Which universities can I go to?
Each department has different contracted universities. The universities with which the department has an agreement can be seen on the web page when the application dates are officially announced and the online application is made.

Will my grant not be paid until my documents are complete?
Grants will not be credited until the documents specified in the letter of commitment have been submitted.

How do I fill in the adjustment form?
The adjustment form is a form that shows which courses correspond to the courses taken at the student's home university while preparing the Learning Agreement. Since it is related to the selection of the courses, it must be filled in with the help of the department coordinators and signed by the department coordinators and the head and deputies of the department.

What should I do if I haven't received my acceptance letter?
Each university has a different system. Some universities may send acceptance letters earlier than the normal process, while others may send them later. If there is a situation that develops outside the normal process, you can send an e-mail to the other university or call the other university to request the acceptance letter to be sent with the support of the department coordinators.

What should I do if I mailed the Learning Agreement to the opposite university without getting a copy?
Learning Agreements must be photocopied before they are sent to the opposite university. If a photocopy is not taken, a fax of the unsigned Learning Agreement should be requested.

I don't have a visa, should I register for my classes?
Even within the Erasmus Program, there is no 100% guarantee of obtaining a visa. If the visa is not obtained, it is obligatory to register for courses and continue the education period.

I will continue my education at a university abroad with Erasmus, which university will I pay the tuition fee to?
During the period in which the Erasmus program is continued, the tuition fee is paid to the student's home university.

Will I register and choose courses at Giresun University before going abroad?
Within the Erasmus program, course registration is not made after it is finalized whether to be an Erasmus student or not, and course selection is not made since course registration will not be made.

What is a student declaration? I'm out of town, can I not take it?
The Erasmus student declaration (Erasmus student status) is issued to students who meet the Erasmus eligibility criteria and have been selected by their university to spend an Erasmus period abroad, either studying at an eligible partner university or being placed for an internship in an enterprise or other eligible organization. The Erasmus student declaration must be obtained under any circumstances in order to see your rights that you expect as an Erasmus student and what you need to do as an Erasmus student.

I will issue the power of attorney in my hometown, is it okay if I bring it to you?
Power of Attorney (It is necessary for the person you leave as your proxy to carry out the transactions on your behalf in case of a problem that may arise regarding money transactions or student transactions, it may not be issued because it is not essential. If a power of attorney is to be issued, a photocopy of it must be submitted in order to ensure that the person to be represented is known and official.

Where can we find the codes to be written in the grant agreement?
The codes that should be written in the grant agreement can be found by examining the Erasmus application handbook.

I completed my studies abroad, what should I do to get the 20% grant?
In order to receive the 20% grant, there are documents that need to be submitted. The documents to be submitted are the transcript from the opposite university, confirmation sheet indicating the exact duration of the stay, student activity report form which can be found in the Erasmus application handbook and can help students to clearly state their satisfaction or complaints, and a photocopy of the passport showing the entry and exit. Once these documents are submitted in full, the rest of the students' grants are deposited.

I went for two semesters and failed one semester, what should I do?
The calculation is made by looking at the confirmation sheet, which is among the return documents and which is obligatory to be brought or sent from the other university, and which states the exact date intervals in which the student stayed at the other university. According to the appropriateness of the calculation, the student deposits the grant of the period he/she did not continue as an Erasmus student to the bank.

What kind of treatment will I face if I return before the planned activity period is completed at the university I am attending?
In the event that students return early from the planned mobility activity period due to necessity (family reasons, health reasons, etc.), the student will be asked to return the overpaid grant, leaving the amount of the grant for the period of the student's stay abroad with the student. In case the student completes the activity period without justification, the entire grant is taken back. Under any circumstances, a student who receives the Erasmus grant and goes abroad cannot be an Erasmus student for the second time.

What are the ECTS credits in course adjustments based on?
ECTS credits are organized by departments according to the difficulty of the course and the preparation before the course. For example, a 4-credit course at the Faculty of Engineering may have more ECTS credits than this.

I am a disabled student, are the conditions the same for me?
When the conditions for participation in the Erasmus program are evaluated, our students with disabilities are definitely not in a negative situation in terms of both evaluation and grant receipt, on the contrary, they have more gains.

Is there a possibility that the 20% grant I will receive on my return will not be given?
Just as a student can qualify to go abroad by showing the necessary success during the application period (of course, he/she also receives an Erasmus grant in return), he/she may also face certain sanctions in case of failure.

What should I do if I am on the reserve list?
Students who are in the reserve status must wait for the placement of the students who are in the main status. If there are any vacancies left after the placement of the main students, the reserve students are given a chance.

I want to change my preference, what can I do?
In order for students to change their preferences, there must be vacant quotas. As long as there are vacancies, it is necessary to submit the petition approved and signed by the department coordinator.
